Raafat Ballan is a Syrian artist who was born in Swaidaa, Syria, in 1990. He studied drawing and oil painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus University, earning his degree in fine arts in 2014.
Living in the Netherlands since a couple of months, Raafat paints portraits through which he expresses his vision of truth – the most important thing in his art. Through his vision he explores the honest facial expressions of people hidden behind the masks we wear. He looks for the truth in the constantly changing expressions of the people he encounters and finishes his vision using the lines and the colours. Through his work Raafat endeavours to present his feeling about the faces that he observes. There is no need to explain stories behind the paintings; the painting is the story itself.
While working on his portraits Raafat teaches local and refugee kids. In a weekly workshop he works with them on lines, colour and different drawing techniques.
